In 1849, Eliza Sommers stows away on a ship leaving Valparaiso, Chile, to follow her lover, Joaqu·in Andieta, to the California gold fields, where she accepts the help of a Tai Chi'en, a chinese doctor, in her search for Joaqu·in and in adjusting to life in a new society.
