The image on the front cover of this book is a geyser at Yellowstone National Park. Notice that you can see water in all three of its states: solid, liquid, and gas. The molecules superimposed on the image are those of water. The differences between the solid, liquid, and gaseous states of water are related to the differences in the way that the water molecules are arranged in each state. This idea-that the properties of matter are determined by the properties of atoms and molecules-is the central theme of this book, and indeed the central theme of chemistry itself.
