The Preliminary English Test corresponds to Level Two in the Cambridge ESOL five-level system. It also corresponds to the Association of Language Teachers in Europe (ALTE) Level Two, and Council of Europe level B1. There are three papers in the examination: Reading and Writing, Listening, and Speaking. To get a passing grade, candidates must achieve 70% of the total marks available, or aboye. Candidates are graded on the total score from all three papers and there is no pass or fail grade for individual papers.
