This book is for students who speak English as a second language and who are planning to study at an English-speaking university. There is some information you need before enrolling, such as details of the IELTS and TOEFL examination, there are chapters for students doing a first degree, and there is some information for postgraduate students. We have tried to write in straightforward language at a level you would need to study at university. The book is based on our own experiences as teachers and as students in various countries. Both of us have gone overseas for university study and know what it is like to study in a second language. We have also listened to the stories of university students who speak English as a second language, and to their teachers. Their experiences and ours helped us write this book. Because this is a reference book, and because different chapters will be of interest at different times, readers can turn to whatever section suits them. First have a look at the Contents pages and see if a chapter fits your interest, such as the chapter on ´Lectures´, which gives advice on listening and notetaking. If you don?t find exactly what you want in the Contents list, then turn to the index. Here you can look up a topic you want to know more about, such as notetaking or tutorials or homes ray. Use the index for new words you hear everyone use at university, such as Faculty or discussion boards. The other place to look for word meanings is in the Glossary. This section is arranged like a small dictionary, giving you a short, quick meaning of terms that are used through the book. If you want to know more about the meaning of any of these words then you can go back to the index to find the page where each is explained in more detail.
