This phonics course has been devised with the young learner in mind. At the early stages in their development, children need help discriminating sounds so that they are ready to identify the differences between the various letter sounds in English. Children need to play games guessing different sounds, for example, hearing sounds with musical instruments, sounds in the environment such as birds, cars, the wind, and different voices. They need to distinguish between soft and loud sounds and sounds from different directions. They should also be able to notice differences between shapes and patterns so that their visual discrimination is developed to enable them to recognize letter shapes. Children need to look at similarities and differences between several images in preparation for this. It is vital that children have these experiences alongside their phonic learning.
